Bateau Boats - Boat plans online

Date          Work Done  Hrs
02/01 Completed 1 bay. Outside bays are complete. Lowered boat from elevated position, to floor level. I have decided to flip the hull over to tape and glass the bottom at this point.   2.50
02/02 I set up some temporary supports for the hull to rest on when flipped. Another garage clean-up. Four friends helped flip the hull.   3.00
02/03 Rounded all the outside edges first with a belt sander and 60 grit , then used a fairing board to smooth out the round over. Taped all the seams, keel and chines and managed to glass one side of the bottom. I am using MAS epoxy now and find out it is wetting out the easiest of the three that I have tried.

Taping of the chine with 12 oz biaxial.

Holes where wire ties were cut are visible as dark spots.

02/04 Really cold night last night. Epoxy is still soft in some areas. Set up plastic over hull, turned on the heater underneath  and covered with blankets in hopes it will harden up so I can glass the remaining side on the bottom today.   0.50

Biaxial cloth in place and ready for resin.

02/05 Glassed remaining bottom half and two stern corners. The outside glassing with biaxial is now complete. I will be applying a layer of cloth to the sides after fairing.

Working with the heat gun and squeegee.

02/06 Washed bottom with warm water to remove blush. Cut and installed skeg as per plans. Glued , screwed and glassed it in place using 6 oz fabric.   2.50
02/07 Ear Protection and respirator in place: sanded entire bottom.

You can see outline of taped joints and overlaps.

Close up after sanding.

Mixed a slurry of epoxy and west 410 filler (2 parts resin and one part 410) and added some white pigment and flow coated the bottom.

02/08  Washed bottom with warm water and some soap to remove tackiness (blush) I think if it was warmer I would not be having the blushing problem.  0.50
02/10 I needed to let a day go by again before I could start sanding. Used a belt sander with 50 grit paper to cut through the epoxy. I am very happy with the result. Looks like the hi-build primer will finish up the fairing at this point. Again respirator, gloves and ear protection is a must. Full eye protection is also a good idea. One more tip.....let people know you can't hear or see them coming ....maybe hang a sign on the door. I was "zoned out" while sanding and someone came up behind me...scared the sh*t out of me!  6.50
02/11  Cut and fit 6 oz. fabric for sides of boat and transom. Plans say glass here is optional. I decided to use a light fabric. i used masking tape to hold it in place.  1.50
02/12  Filled holes and defects in plywood on sides and transom. Glassed both sides and transom. Mixed up more slurry and spread with a squeegee. The out side of hull is now complete as far as the glass and epoxy are concerned. Applied the first coat of hi-build primer to the bottom. I am using Petit 2 part # 4777.

Sanded bottom, 6 oz glass applied to sides and epoxy slurry being applied

First primer coat with Petit 4777

02/15 Sanded the entire outside of hull with my new porter cable random orbital sander with vacuum attachment connected to a shop vac. Really cut the dust problem down to size.

After sanding the difference in primer color has highlighted what happens when using a belt sander with 50 grit.

02/16
Applied a coat of white primer this time. Interlux 4279
 1.00
02/17 Tried sanding to no avail.....paint just clogged up the sandpaper. I will have to wait another day. The white primer did highlight a bunch of areas that needed filling so I mixed a batch of epoxy with a good amount of West 410 mixed in. It feathered out nicely with the squeegee. I ended up going to a local boat show and was able to find an 80 hp Yamaha four stroke at an excellent price. I was concerned about the weight but it turns out it is only about 50 lbs heavier then a Mercury 90 2 stroke and I should be able to realize a 30 percent fuel savings with the four stroke.

Epoxy and west 410 filler applied.

02/18 Sanded down entire hull .........again.........each time it gets easier and the results are nicer. I applied what I hope to be the last coat of primer. This time it was an interlux two part polyurethane. I used this for compatability, because I will be using Awlgrip which is an agressive two part polyurethane.   7.00
02/19 Tried sanding the primer....same thing.....I have to wait another day. I did sand one small area and did a test painting with the Awlgrip. I wanted to make sure it would be ok with the primer and that it would cure ok. It is leftover from another project and is about 4 years old.   0.50
02/20 Test area was fine. Sanded down entire hull........again......this was the easiest sanding yet....bottom is super smooth at this point. I did, once again,  find more flaws. They were very minor and included some pinholes. I used some spackle to fill them.

Final flaws filled and hull sanded awaiting paint.....finally!!!

02/22 Painted the hull with "Snow White" Awlgrip. As usual it seems no matter how careful I try to be there are always a few drips and sags............overall.....the bottom finish is very good. I will probably be re-doing the sides so the sags there will be sanded out. Time to flip for the last time!

Transom.....note reflections.
Again...reflections of shelf and thermometer can be seen. Awlgrip has super high gloss. It is rolled on using a mohair short nap roller and tipped with a brush dipped in thinner. Basically a dry brush. This evens out the roller marks.

02/23 Flipped the boat over!

The "flippin" crew.....I know, I know
The picture quality could be better............ I am on the far left.

02/24 Re- assembled cradle and placed under boat.

If you look carefully you can see caster wheels on the cradle.

02/25 Glassed two more bays...10 more to go.  3.00
02/27 Glassed five bays........5 to go!  7.50
02/28  Glassed two bays........3 to go!
